Where Do Facial Wrinkles Occur?

Facial wrinkles do not discriminate. They can appear nearly anywhere on the face from the forehead to the chin. Some of the most troubles lines patients want to treat include:

• Horizontal creases across the forehead
• Vertical lines between the eyebrows, known as frown lines or the 11s
• Horizontal wrinkles across the bridge of the nose, dubbed bunny lines
• Lines fanning out from the eyes, better known as Crow's Feet

• Perioral lines that extend from the upper lip, known as smoker's or lipstick lines

Why Do I Have Facial Wrinkles?

There are two primary reasons why wrinkles form:

Dynamic Wrinkles

Lines that appear around the forehead and eyes are often the result of repetitive facial expressions like smiling or squinting. In the beginning, you only see those lines when you make these expressions. However, they can become a permanent addition to your face over time. Horizontal forehead creases, frown lines and Crow's Feet are all known as dynamic wrinkles. These lines are best addressed by targeting the muscles that lead to their formation.

Static Wrinkles

Creases that form around the nose and mouth usually have a different cause. Collagen, an essential protein found in abundance in the body into our 20s, provides much-needed support to the dermal structure to maintain the soft, supple quality of the skin. Once we hit our 30s, collagen levels decrease, diminishing that support and leading to skin laxity and the formation of wrinkles in the lower half of the face. These types of lines are known as static lines because they are present all the time. The best course of action for static wrinkles is to restore the dermal support and smooth away the creases from the inside out.

Treatment Options for Facial Wrinkles

There are two approaches to reducing the appearance of facial wrinkles. The first is to relax the muscles that lead to the formation of dynamic wrinkles. The second is to restore collagen and support to the dermal structure to create smoother, firmer skin.

Muscle Relaxers

The most effective way to reduce muscle activity is with injections of a neuromodulator like Botox®, Dysport® or Xeomin®. The FDA approved these medications to treat those nagging lines that appear on the forehead and around the eyes. We administer injections in just a few minutes in our office and patients report the treatments are relatively comfortable and easy to tolerate. Once your procedure is completed, you return to your busy day with results that develop quickly and last.

Results can appear as early as a week or two following your procedure. Once they are visible, they should last about three to four months, and you can schedule regular treatments to maintain your smoother look indefinitely.

Skin Supporters

Static wrinkles can be treated through a few different methods. Dermal fillers can be injected into the dermal structure, which restores support and subtle volume, smoothing away those wrinkles from within the skin's layers. There are different formulations of fillers with subtle variances in texture and consistency to match the quality of the skin in different facial areas precisely. These variations in dermal fillers allow us to improve delicate areas of the face, such as the skin around the mouth or under the eyes, as well as larger areas of concern, like deeper nasolabial folds, with significant and very natural-looking results.

Injections only take a few minutes to perform and treatment has no downtime. Results can last anywhere from six months to a year or longer.

Collagen Producers

We also offer treatments that stimulate the body to produce more collagen. Increased collagen in the skin is responsible for natural, long-lasting rejuvenation and a visible reduction in wrinkles. These treatments include:

Skin Tightening to Improve Jowls

To minimize the appearance of jowls, you need effective skin tightening and rejuvenation. We offer a variety of treatments to help in this area, including:

Microneedling with PRP

Microneedling using platelet-rich plasma or PRP is a great way to reverse the effects of time on the skin. This procedure creates micro-channels in the skin that stimulate the body to produce more collagen. At the same time, growth factors in the PRP promote cell renewal for skin refreshment from the inside out. The PRP is taken from you during a regular blood draw and then processed for application during the microneedling process. The entire procedure is comfortable and has few side effects.

Radiofrequency Skin Tightening

Radiofrequency energy can penetrate deep into the dermal layers to tighten the skin without damaging the outer dermis or surrounding tissue. At Morpheus Medical Aesthetics, we use the innovative Sublime device. This machine can be used to tighten and firm any area of the face, from the delicate skin around the eyes to the jowl formation that occurs along the jawline. The procedure is comfortable and requires no numbing in most cases. There is no downtime, and your results will appear in the weeks following. A series of treatments is usually needed to achieve an optimal outcome.

Non-Surgical Facelift

Reducing jowls and sculpting the jawline does not require surgery in all cases. With the Profound RF microneedling device, we can simulate the effects of a facelift without incisions, anesthesia or a recovery process. This treatment works deep within the dermal structure without disrupting the outer dermis or surrounding tissue. In addition to immediate constriction of tissue, the device triggers additional collagen and elastin production for results that will continue to develop and last for many months.

This treatment is more intense than the others, so it is performed using a local anesthetic. The procedures usually take less than one hour to complete; however, you will be able to relax throughout your session. After your treatment, you may be slightly red and swollen. You may also notice some skin shedding in the days following your procedure, but most patients are able to resume all their normal daily activities immediately after their treatment. Results usually appear within two weeks and continue to improve for up to six months.
