What are pigmented lesions?

Pigmented lesions are areas of the skin that have a darker color than the surrounding skin. They can be caused by a variety of factors, including sun damage, aging, and genetics. Common types of pigmented lesions include age spots, freckles, and melasma. While these lesions are generally harmless, many people choose to have them treated for cosmetic reasons. IPL treatment is a popular choice for many our Morpheus clients for reducing the appearance of pigmented lesions.

How does IPL treatment work?

IPL treatment works by using intense pulses of light to target the pigmented cells in the skin. The light energy is absorbed by the melanin in the cells, causing them to break down and be absorbed by the body. IPL treatment is non-invasive and does not require any downtime, making it a convenient option for those with busy schedules. Additionally, IPL treatment can be customized to target specific areas of the skin, allowing for precise and effective treatment.

What to expect during and after IPL treatment.

During IPL treatment, patients may experience a mild sensation of heat or discomfort, but this is typically well-tolerated and can be managed with cooling techniques. After treatment, patients may experience some redness or swelling in the treated area, but this typically resolves within a few hours to a few days. It is important to avoid sun exposure and to use sunscreen after treatment to protect the skin. Results from IPL treatment for pigmented lesions can be seen within a few weeks, with continued improvement over time. Consult with your qualified Morpheus provider to learn more about what to expect during and after IPL treatment.

How to prepare for IPL treatment.

In the majority of instances, we recommend that our patients apply Hydroquinone to the treatment area for a period of 2-3 weeks before undergoing the treatment. This application of Hydroquinone aids in minimizing the discoloration. As for any treatments, a Morpheus provider will explain the recommendations in details. Before undergoing IPL treatment for pigmented lesions, it is also important to avoid sun exposure and tanning beds for at least two weeks prior to the procedure. In addition, try to avoid using any products that may irritate the skin, such as retinoids or exfoliants, for at least one week prior to treatment. Please inform your Morpheus aesthetician of any medications you are taking, as some medications can increase the risk of complications during treatment. As always, we will discuss with you any concerns or questions they may have prior to treatment.
